Safe Transfusion Assessment Tool (STAT)

Blood transfusions are among the most commonly used and often overused medical interventions performed in hospitalized patients, and are frequently administered by residents and clinicians without subspecialty training in Transfusion Medicine or Blood Banking.  Given the significant and well-recognized risks associated with the use of blood products, we hope that this Safe Transfusion assessment and educational tool helps to provide understanding of transfusion-associated complications, blood component indications, and current alternatives to transfusion.

The Safe Transfusion Assessment Tool (STAT) is a concise, validated, and reliable knowledge assessment tool that may be used by researchers and educators to augment transfusion medicine curricula. This tool is appropriate for all levels of trainees, physicians, and healthcare providers responsible for aspects of blood product transfusion. Scores can help identify areas in which trainees require additional support and areas of potential educational interventions.

The STAT is linked below. Completion of the instrument should take about 10-minutes. Results are anonymous and will not be linked to any personal identifiers.
